Description
The Lybster Quatre Bras 'Service Cottages' are a group of mid-19th century buildings situated on a corner plot where the Wick Road (A9) meets Main Street. The main terrace is a tall, two-storey and attic structure comprising four two-bay dwellings. These dwellings, along with four canted formers facing west onto Main Street, return to Wick Road with a four-bay frontage. The construction is of coursed rubble with tooled dressings. A slightly later range of two two-storey and attic, four-bay dwellings adjoins the south gable facing Main Street, and one of these dwellings incorporates paired shop windows at ground floor level. Each house has three gabled dormers with finials projecting from the roofline. Some original 12-pane windows remain, along with long, narrow rear stair windows. The roof is slate-covered and features ridge and end stacks.
A row of mid-19th century single-storey service cottages stand nearby, facing the A9. This row is seven bays wide, with two doorways, and includes a large garage door in the end (south) bay. It is built of rubble and has end and ridge stacks, covered by a Caithness slate roof.
A later two-storey, four-bay range on the corner site does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
