Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings situated at the corner of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The main block is a tall, two-storey and attic terrace consisting of four two-bay dwellings. Four canted bay windows face west onto Main Street, with a further four-bay frontage returning to Wick Road. These dwellings sit closely against the south gable facing Main Street. Directly adjacent is a slightly later range of two two-storey and attic, four-bay dwellings, one of which has a shop window inserted into the ground floor. Each house has three gabled dormers with finials that break the roofline. Some original 12-pane windows remain, along with long, narrow rear stair windows. The building features ridge and end stacks, and a slate roof.
Further along the A9 is a mid-19th century, single-storey row of service cottages fronting north. This row contains seven bays and two doorways, with a large garage door in the end (south) bay. It is constructed from rubble with end and ridge stacks, and a Caithness slate roof.
A later two-storey, four-bay range on the corner site was not depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
