Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings located on a corner site at the junction of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The buildings comprise a tall, two-storey and attic terrace at the corner, and a slightly later range of two-storey and attic dwellings set closely against the south gable. The original terrace consists of four two-bay houses, with four canted bay windows facing west towards Main Street, which then continues along Wick Road with a four-bay frontage. A second, later range of two dwellings with four bays each is situated adjacent to this, with one dwelling featuring paired shop windows on the ground floor. Each house has three gabled dormers with finials breaking the roofline. Some original 12-pane windows remain, alongside long, narrow rear stair windows. The buildings have ridge and end stacks and a slate roof.
A mid-19th century row of single-storey service cottages, with their north gable facing the A9, stands nearby. This row consists of seven bays with two doorways, and a large garage door within the end (south) bay. It is constructed of rubble with end and ridge stacks and a Caithness slate roof.
The slightly later two-storey, four-bay range does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
