Description
Smith's Barn, located on the Ardtornish Estate, was built in 1851. It is a long, high three-storey barn and byre featuring 11 bays on both the north and south sides. The structure is made of squared rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, although the south elevation has considerable rendering and some alterations. This elevation includes a substantial central gabled hoist-loft that serves both the first and loft floors, with double leaf plank doors on either side.
The east and west gables have symmetrical window arrangements, with a central door in the east gable situated beneath a square window. This is flanked by additional windows on the ground and first floors. The loft is illuminated by paired pointed-headed triple lancets. A datestone is positioned in the center of the gable. The north elevation features regularly spaced single lancets for ventilation and light in the loft. The eaves cornice has continuous blocked detailing, and the plain bargeboarded gables are topped with a slate roof that includes three truncated ridge ventilators.
Inside, the ground floor is used as a byre.
