Description

Kinlochaline Castle is a tall square castle that likely dates back to the 15th century, with remodels occurring in the late 16th or early 17th century. It underwent extensive restoration in 1890 by Alexander Ross of Inverness. The castle features two storeys above a vaulted undercroft, constructed from rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.

The entrance on the raised ground floor is located in the south wall and is approached by a forestair added in 1890. Above the door, there is a small carved stone plaque with a cable-moulded border, depicting a stag being pursued by a hound, with a fish below. The castle has a corbelled wallhead, with corbelled bartizan turrets at the southeast and southwest corners, and box-machiolation above the doorway, which dates back to the 15th century but was rebuilt during the 1890 restoration. There are also restored gun loops and some enlarged windows from the 1890 work.

Inside, the first-floor hall features a large fireplace in the north wall, with a carved stone plaque above the lintel showing a figure of a kneeling woman holding a disk or bowl in her right hand and a flask under her left arm, along with a beehive-shaped object in the top left corner. A newel stair from the 17th century leads to the second floor, with another stair providing access to the wallhead.
