Description

Coroghon Barn is a long rectangular barn, likely built in the late 18th century, situated on a site that slopes to the west and south. The west elevation is two storeys high, while the east elevation is set into the slope, creating a raised ground floor. The barn is constructed of harl pointed random rubble with roughly dressed rubble dressings. The west elevation features three later buttresses for reinforcement, along with three lower ground floor byre entrances and an enlarged stable entrance at the northwest corner. In the centre of the raised ground floor, there is a blocked winnowing door, flanked by two long slit vents to the south, and an additional vent in the centre of the south gable. The long rear elevation has a central enlarged entrance or winnowing door, with a pair of vents to the left that correspond to the ones on the west elevation, now modified into windows. Access to the centre doorway is provided by a forestair in the north gable, which serves a bothy or dwelling. The barn has a single apex stack at the north end and is topped with a slate roof featuring a pottery ridge.

Inside, the barn is roughly divided into two unequal sections. The central and southern two-thirds contain a byre on the lower ground floor and a threshing floor barn on the raised ground floor. The northern portion has slightly different floor levels due to the slope, featuring a stable with an enlarged door on the lower ground floor and a two-room dwelling on the upper floor.
