Description

The bridge at Glen Shiel, built around 1815 by Thomas Telford, is a substantial single-span stone arch bridge crossing the River Shiel. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a dressed stone arched ring and parapet, incorporating a string course. The bridge is 65 feet wide and accessed from the south by a long drystone causeway. Contemporary reports, including an advertisement for tenders in the Edinburgh Evening Courant in February 1815, and Telford’s own Atlas, document its construction. The New Statistical Account of Scotland also references the bridge.
