Description
Tigh-Geal is a house dating from 1830-31, with subsequent repairs and alterations in 1844, 1848, and a further addition and repair scheme in 1909 undertaken by Alexander Ross and Son. It is a 2-storey and attic, 3-bay house, harled with painted tooled margins. The central bay is slightly advanced and features a pediment. The ground and first floor windows are flanked by windows, some of which were later enlarged to become bipartite windows. There are two original piended dormers and a more recent box dormer in the centre. The west gable has two ground floor windows and one first floor window. The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing. The house has corniced and stone-margined end stacks, with a similar stack at the apex of the pediment, and a slate roof. A later 2-storey, 2-bay wing was added to the rear.
A contemporary L-plan steading range is situated nearby, encompassing stables and a gighouse (with a later enlarged doorway) in one arm, and a 3-bay hay/threshing barn and a 3-bay byre in the other. The barn end features a pair of winnowing doors, divided into two halves, flanked by round-headed, louvred vents, all of which are mirrored in the west elevation; a similar vent is present on the south gable. The steading is a single storey and is harled with a slate roof.
The house is sometimes referred to as "The White House". References to tenders for work on the house appeared in the Inverness Courier on August 7, 1844, May 23, 1848, and July 13, 1909. Details from the New Statistical Account, page 178, also provide additional information.
