Description

This is a house and associated steading range dating to the 1830s, with subsequent repairs, alterations, and additions recorded in newspaper advertisements from 1844, 1848, and 1909, when work was undertaken by Alexander Ross and Son.

The house is a 2-storey and attic, 3-bay structure, with harled exterior walls and painted tooled margins. The central bay is slightly advanced and features a pediment. The original windows at ground and first floor level were later enlarged to become bipartites. There are two original piended dormers, and a more recent box dormer in the centre. The west gable has two ground floor windows and one first floor window. The windows retain 12-pane glazing. The house has corniced and stone-margined end stacks, and a similarly detailed stack at the apex of the pediment, topped by a slate roof. A later 2-storey, 2-bay wing was added to the rear.

The steading range is contemporary with the house, built in an L-shape, and includes stables, a gighouse (with a later, enlarged doorway), a 3-bay hay/threshing barn, and a 3-bay byre. The barn end features a pair of winnowing doors, divided in half, flanked by round-headed, louvred vents; these features are mirrored in the west elevation, with a similar vent present on the south gable. The steading is single-storey, harled, and has a slate roof. The building was formerly known as Tigh-Geal, or "The White House", and was previously Kintail Manse.
