Description

This is a house and associated steading range dating to the 1830s, with subsequent repairs, alterations, and additions. The house, built between 1830 and 1831, is a two-storey and attic, three-bay structure. It is harled with painted, tooled margins. The central entrance bay is slightly advanced and features a pediment. The ground and first floor windows are flanked by windows, with the later enlargement of some to create bipartite openings. There are two original piended dormers, along with a more modern box dormer in the centre. The west gable has two ground floor windows and one first floor window. The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing. The building has corniced, stone-margined end stacks, and a similarly detailed stack at the apex of the pediment, all beneath a slate roof. A later two-storey, two-bay wing extends to the rear.

The contemporary steading range is laid out in an L-shape, incorporating stables and a gighouse (with a later enlarged doorway) in one arm, and a three-bay hay/threshing barn and a three-bay byre in the second arm. The barn end features a pair of winnowing doors, divided into two halves, flanked by round-headed, louvred vents; these are mirrored in the west elevation, along with a similar vent in the south gable. The steading is single-storey, harled, and has a slate roof. The property was formerly known as Kintail Manse and is referred to as ‘Tigh-Geal’ – The White House. Historic documents, including advertisements for tenders from 1844, 1848 and 1909, and the New Statistical Account, provide further detail.
