Description

The Drochaid Undalain Bridge, located by Shiel Bridge, dates to approximately 1815. It is a wide, single-span stone arched bridge constructed of rubble stone with a dressed stone arch ring and a low parapet. The bridge has splayed approaches. A repair girder is present. The bridge was built as part of the Parliamentary road construction project from Glenmoriston to Shiel Bridge in 1815. It is now bypassed by the new alignment of the A87 road. Historical records, including advertisements for tenders from February 27, 1815, and publications such as The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland, provide further details about the bridge’s construction.
