Description

Duthac House Care Home, located on Academy Street in Tain, was designed by James Smith between 1808 and 1813, with later additions by A Maitland and Sons in 1896 and D MacPherson and Sons from Dingwall in 1935. The building features a simple late Georgian classical facade, consisting of two storeys and seven bays. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the sides are constructed with rubble and ashlar dressings.

The central entrance has a Doric pilastered doorpiece, complete with a decorative fanlight and paired panelled doors that have reeded detailing. The outer bays are slightly advanced and feature tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors. The first-floor windows are connected by a moulded cill course and have 12-pane glazing. The building is topped with a mutule cornice, paired cornice stacks, and a piended slate roof.

At the rear, there is a later wing and a hall from the late 19th century, built with rubble and featuring Diocletian windows in each pedimented gable end, also with a slate roof. The interior has been significantly altered, but a single Corinthian column and two pilasters remain at the top of the stairs, along with an oval room on the first floor that retains its original moulded frieze on the ceiling.
