Description
Maritime House, located at 26 East Dock Street in Dundee, was designed by James MacLaren in 1891 and showcases a Free Victorian Renaissance style. This three-storey building features a mansard attic and has a five-bay ashlar front with rubble sides and rear.
The main elevation is marked by bays divided by pilasters that are channelled at the base. The construction began in 1853 under the direction of architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. The ground floor includes lion heads at the first floor, with part fluted pilasters on the second floor that have Ionic capitals, supporting the main entablature and balustrade.
The central doorpiece is arched and recessed between Corinthian pilasters, with a balustrade above. There are single windows on either side, while the outer bays feature slender cast-iron columned tripartite windows. The first-floor bays are set under depressed segmental arches, with shallow recessed canted windows on the outer sides that have swagged aprons. The inner bays contain single windows and a centre bipartite window, all adorned with lugged architraves and carved friezes. The second floor has single lights and a centre bipartite window, with alternate diminutive cast-iron balconies. The building is topped with a balustraded parapet that features obelisk and urn finials. A central arcaded canted dormer with a prismatic roof and wrought-iron finial is prominent, flanked by two single-light arched and pedimented dormers. There are later dormers in the upper part of the mansard roof, which is covered with slate and has twin ridge and gable-end stacks.
The sides and rear of the building are constructed of rubble and include single and bipartite windows. The commercial interiors have seen little alteration.
