Description

James MacLaren, 1891. Free Victorian Renaissance, 3-storey

and mansard attic 5-bay ashlar front, rubble sides and rear.

MAIN ELEVATION: bays divided by pilasters, channelled at

steps. Begun 1853, Sir G.G. Scott, archt.

ground floor, with lions heads at 1st, part fluted in 2nd

with Ionic capitals, supporting main entablature and

balustrade.

Arched centre doorpiece recessed between Corinthian pilasters, balustrade over. Single windows to either side, outer bays

with slender cast-iron columned tripartites. 1st floor

bays set under depressed segmental arches, shallow recessed

canted windows in outer with swagged aprons, inner single

and centre bipartite windows with lugged architraves and

carved friezes. 2nd floor single lights, centre bipartite,

with alternate cast-iron diminutive balconies. Balustraded

parapet with obelisk and urn finials. Central arcaded

4-light canted dormer with prismatic roof and wrought-iron

finial. 2 single-light arched and pedimented dormers to either

side. Later dormers in upper part of mansard. Slate roof and

twin ridge and gable-end stacks.

Sides and rear rubble-built with single and bipartite windows. Little-altered commercial interiors.
