Description

Victoria Dock, located in Dundee Harbour, is a significant wet dock that began construction in 1833 based on projections by Thomas Telford and was completed between 1869 and 1875 by David Cunningham, with Charles Ower providing important consultations. The dock covers nearly 10.7 acres, features a quayage of 3,860 feet, a depth of 16 feet, and an entrance width of 54 feet, all built with Kingoodie ashlar.

The western wall was completed between 1833 and 1836, while the southern wall was formed in 1837 and later altered at the eastern end between 1869 and 1875 to accommodate a graving dock. The northern and western walls were constructed later and feature slightly larger ashlar blocks. The dock is equipped with capstans and other dockside furniture.

At the entrance between Camperdown and Victoria Docks, there are swing bridges. The pedestrian swing bridge is a segmental arched, two-leaf plate iron structure, with each leaf featuring nine portholes that decrease in size towards the center. The arms of the Dundee Harbour Board are located at the fulcrum point, and it has a tubular iron handrail and a timber deck, along with a counterweight that has sockets for leveraging the bridge.

The vehicular swing bridge is a single-leaf wrought-iron design, likely hydraulically operated, with a tubular iron handrail and a flat timber deck.
