Description
43 Trades Lane in Dundee is a late 19th-century, two-storey commercial building that has seen alterations and additions in the early 20th century. It is situated on a gushet site at the corner of East Dock Street and Candle Lane. The front of the building is rendered, while the rear is constructed of brick, topped with a platform slate roof that is piended at the gushet.
The front elevation features a painted pilastered ground floor with a dentilled cornice and a corniced parapet. Large plate glass windows are present on the ground floor, while the first floor has tripartite windows set within recessed panels that are separated by pilaster strips.
On the Trades Lane elevation, there are 14 bays. The left side has seven bays, with a pair of doors and a fanlight at the fourth bay from the left, framed by a keystoned and moulded round-headed doorcase with anta pilasters. The doorpiece is pilastered and fluted at the top, featuring paired consoles and a segmental pediment that rises through the cornice. There are three windows on either side of the doors and seven windows on the first floor. The right side also has seven bays, including a door and doorpiece similar to the left side, two vehicular openings to the left, and a three-bay shopfront on the far left with central doors. The first floor has seven windows, with the right side featuring bipartite windows, and there are seven dormers in the slate-hung Mansard roof.
The East Dock Street elevation includes a canted gushet bay with rounded angles, featuring five windows on the ground floor and six on the first floor, which have pilastered mullions and shallow segmental heads. This window pattern may have also been present on the Trades Lane elevation.
The Candle Lane elevation has various openings, some of which are pilastered, though most are blocked at the ground floor. The first-floor windows are partially blocked as well.
The interior of the building has not been seen.
