Description

The Department of Employment on Dock Street in Dundee is an early 20th-century, three-storey public building with five bays facing Dock Street and six bays on Gellatly Street. It is situated on a prominent corner site and features classical detailing. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with red brick used for the sides and rear, and has a concealed roof.

The design includes a base course and a cill band at the ground floor, with a two-storey pilastrade that supports an entablature and a main cornice at the second floor. This section features nook shafts at the recessed rounded angles and pilaster strips at the second floor. The building is topped with a corniced blocking course and a heightened parapet at the rounded angle, which displays a large sculpted Royal Arms. There are angle pilasters at the far left on Gellatly Street and the far right on Dock Street, which rise to raised parapets at the outer bays.

The doorcases are architraved and lugged, featuring overdoor panels and decorative cornices. The windows are bipartite, with timber 12-pane sash and case frames, although the bottom sash at the ground floor consists of a single pane. These windows are set in recessed panels, with two-storey panels at the lower floors and single windows at the outer bays.

On the Dock Street elevation, the rounded angle to the left has a door on the ground floor and a bipartite window above, flanked by giant nook shafts. Above this is a parapet inscribed with 'nemo me impune lacessit'. To the right, there are three bays with windows at the ground, first, and second floors, and the far right bay has a door on the ground floor with a single window above on the first and second floors.

On the Gellatly Street elevation, there is a central door with a window above on the first and second floors. There are two bays on either side with windows at the ground, first, and second floors, as well as an angle bay to the right and a similar bay to the left. The interior has not been seen.
