Description
These are a pair of cottages, built in the mid-19th century. The cottages are located on Main Street, Golspie, and were originally known as 'The Cottage' and 'Newton'. They are constructed of tooled rubble with bullfaced stone dressings and feature crowstepped gables.
'The Cottage', dated 1868, is a three-bay, single-storey building with an attic. It has a central doorway and two gabled dormers in the wallhead, with 12-pane glazing in the windows. The dormer gable is initialled 'S' for Sutherland.
'Newton' is a dwelling set at a right angle to 'The Cottage'. It has an advanced gabled front bay, and an entrance in the return southwest elevation. A gabled porch provides access. A large gabled dormer with an 1866 datestone has tripartite 2-pane glazing, and a barred cell window survives at the rear. The roof is slate, with corniced end and ridge stacks. A coped rubble front garden wall encloses the property.
