Description
The Post Office on Main Street in Golspie, built around 1910, is a single-storey building with an attic. It features harled walls with stugged ashlar dressings and timber detailing on the gables. The front has mullioned and transformed windows, with sash and case windows in the dormer and sides, which include small-paned upper sashes. The roof is covered with purple slates and has bracketted eaves, a small domed ridge-ventilator, and ashlar stacks at the rear.
The front elevation facing the main street is asymmetrical with five bays. The entrance door is located left of centre, accompanied by a tripartite window to the left. To the right of the door, there is a single window with a posting box below, sheltered by a bracketted ashlar canopy. An advanced gabled bay to the right features a four-light window, with a bipartite window in the attic above. The outer bay has a single window. The east gable has a door leading to the sorting office, flanked by two windows. There is a lean-to telegraph office on the right, and the windows at the rear are barred.
Inside, the Post Office retains its original grained timber panelled counter and boarded dado. The sorting office has a full-height ceiling with a circular ventilator and retains original benches with pigeon holes and cast-iron swing seats. There is also a cast-iron frame supporting mail bags in the centre of the floor. A dog-leg stair leads to the attic, where the telegraph office is now used as a store.
