Description

The Bank of Scotland building on Main Street, Golspie, dates from around 1814 and was originally constructed as an asymmetrical two-story bank and manager's house. The walls are predominantly harled with ashlar margins and dressings. The main street frontage (southeast) has three bays, with a projecting, gabled bay to the left and a gabled ashlar porch set in a re-entrant angle. A single-story gabled bay extends from the northeast gable. The southwest facade has four bays, with projecting, gabled outer bays featuring canted ashlar bay windows on the ground floor. A square porch, built mainly of ashlar, is located in the re-entrant angle. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with tripartite and bipartite designs throughout. Small attic windows are situated in the gables, and truncated end stacks rise from the roof. The building is covered by a slate roof.

A low, coped, harled rubble retaining wall is present, alongside square, tooled ashlar gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. A pair of cast-iron carriage gates with spearhead detailing is flanked by a matching pedestrian gate and railings.

The building was formerly the British Linen Bank, as shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1873.
