Description
Dated 1906, the James Fraser Shop is an asymmetrical two-storey and attic corner shop and dwelling. The building is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The corner entrance has a wide shop front within a canted angle and features moulded jambs, with a three-windowed oriel above. A wide shop window is located on the ground floor of the Main Street elevation, alongside a slightly smaller window to the left. The first floor of the Main Street elevation has a tripartite window near the centre, with a bipartite window to the left, and a lunette in the attic gable. The gables feature exaggerated scroll skewputts, flanked by single swept dormers.
The return elevation to Fountain Street has a ground floor shop window. A single-storey and attic, two-bay rear wing includes an entrance and a large, piended dormer breaking the wallhead.
Original glazing remains to the shop windows, and multi-pane glazing also features in the upper portion of the windows, in the upper sashes of the dwelling, and in the lunette. Original down-pipes are initialled AA and dated 1906. Further original features include corniced end stacks and slate roofs. The building occupies a corner site with Fountain Street and displays a monogram AA and the date 1906.
