Countess Of Sutherland Memorial Fountain, Fountain Road, Golspie

The Countess of Sutherland Memorial Fountain dates from the mid to later 19th century. It is constructed of heavy, square, polished ashlar. The fountain comprises a square canopy, with a round arch on each face, embellished with moulded imposts and keystoned arches. Each arch is surmounted by a shallow, segmental-headed pediment, the apexes of which are linked by a ball finial. The structure stands on a pedestal, featuring dolphin spouts on each face, and is encircled by a shallow pool with a low, shaped, and moulded retaining wall. Low steps provide access to the pool. A circular, shallow fountain basin is located beneath the canopy. An inscription commemorating Duchess Elizabeth, 1765-1839, is carved into the north pediment. The memorial is situated at the top of Fountain Street and is depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1873. This monument demonstrates group value as a memorial to a notable figure.
