Description
Dated 1867, Carn Dearg is a two-storey and attic building of Scottish Renaissance style, prominently situated on Main Street in Golspie. It presents a three-bay frontage to the northwest, distinguished by a curved corner extending to the west, where it is corbelled above the first floor to create a large crowstepped gable. The exterior is constructed of coursed, stugged rubble with contrasting, tooled sandstone dressings.
The ground floor features a shop front with a round-headed doorway, paired with two similarly detailed shop windows to the left, and a single flat-headed window to the right. The first floor includes one bipartite window, with all other windows being simple sash and case designs, featuring mainly 12-pane glazing. Two gabletted and bargeboarded dormers with sliding sashes on both the front and rear sides are set into the roof. Corniced end stacks rise above the slate roof.
A central, circular stair turret with a conical roof is located at the rear of the building. A later two-storey wing extends to the rear, providing a frontage onto a side lane. The building is initialled “MPJ.” It first appeared on the 1873 Ordnance Survey map as the Post Office. The statutory address is now associated with the Golspie Main Street Co-op Drapery.
