Description

Heavitree House and Cottage is a substantial two-story house with a later wing, built between 1840 and 1850. The main house is constructed of red rubble stone with dressed stone detailing, while the northeast gable and rear elevation are harled. The southeastern section of the house has an advanced, gabled bay, featuring an off-centre entrance with a narrow side window, a chimney stack at the apex, and large windows, with the ground-floor outer bays being particularly wide.

A two-story and attic wing extends from the southwest corner of the rear elevation, creating an L-shaped courtyard to the northeast rear. A large wallhead stack is flanked by bargeboarded and gabled dormers, each with sliding sash windows. The front windows have sixteen panes, separated by thick central mullions, while others have twelve panes. Corniced end stacks are present, and the roof is covered in slate. A long, single-story rubble steading range extends from the rear gable. A low, coped front retaining wall features cast-iron spearhead railings, while drystone walls enclose the remaining boundaries.

The building appears on the 1873 Ordnance Survey map as “Sutherland Railway Hotel.” The statutory address is Old Heavitree Farm, Station Road, Golspie.
