Stables, Armadale Castle, Skye

The stables at Armadale Castle on Skye were designed by James Ferguson and built between 1820 and 1822. This Gothic stable range features a crenellated central tower and is constructed from coursed dark rubble with contrasting pale sandstone dressings. The east-facing structure is two stories high and consists of nine bays, with a large square corbelled and crenellated tower at the center. The tower has a single bipartite window under a square hoodmould on both the ground and upper storeys, while the upper storey at the rear is blind.

Flanking the tower are symmetrical three-bay stable ranges with central doors, as well as outer carriage houses that are slightly advanced and feature large Tudor arched entrances. All windows and doors have pointed heads, with the ground floor windows being longer than those on the first floor, and the glazing is in a Gothic style. The north range includes one ridge chimney, and the roof is piended and slated only on the north side.

On the rear elevation, the pattern of first-floor windows continues, and there is a pointed arched door at the base of the tower. Inside, there are six remaining stalls, each fronted by Gothic arcaded wooden bays, complete with original halter pegs outside each stall.
