Description

The stables at The Lees on Kelso Road in Coldstream date from around 1770 and later. They consist of stable blocks built from rubble with ashlar dressings. The east range is two stories tall and features a three-bay center that is slightly set forward from the wings. This center section has three keystoned elliptical pends, with the two outer pends being blind. There are panelled piers between a band course over the ground floor and 6-pane sash windows on the first floor. The roofs over the outer bays are piended slate, with a tower over the center.

The lower two stages of the tower have 6-pane sashes and band courses, while the third stage features a blind quatrefoil and a battlemented parapet. The fourth stage, which was added later, is set back and has an oculus on each face, along with a corbelled and battlemented parapet and a pyramidal roof. The west elevation is simpler and set back from the wings, with the outer pends open. The first stage window in the tower includes dove holes.

The long north and south wings have a five-bay layout to the west. The ground floor features doors and 12-pane sashes, some of which have been altered, while the first floor has 6-pane sashes. The roofs are piended to the north with brick stacks. The south wing has a short return to the west, primarily consisting of a tall single storey with an outshot to the north that includes a bipartite window. To the south, there are two 12-pane sashes on the left with a corniced doorpiece and a gabletted dormer above, corresponding to the two-storey end bay of the east range, which has one 4-pane sash on the ground floor and two above. The roofs are slate, with a pyramidal roof over the end bay of the east range and a straight skew to the return wing.

Facing the east range are two single-storey blocks with seven bays and dormerless attics. The north range retains stall fittings, while the south range mainly consists of cottages.
