Description
The stables at Craigend Castle, likely designed by Alexander Ramsay in 1812, showcase a Tudor Gothic style. This building combines stables, a coachhouse, and a steading, featuring a square plan with a semi-circular bull pen to the west. It is constructed of squared whinstone with ashlar dressings.
The main south elevation consists of five bays, with the central and outer bays being advanced. The central bay originally had a four-centred arched pend and a hoodmould, though the parapet and sculpted centerpiece are now missing. The inner bays contain mullion and transomed windows with margined glazing, while the outer bays rise to two storeys, featuring attached clustered shafts at the angles and set-offs between the storeys. All windows are adorned with hoodmoulds, and a pierced crenellated parapet crowns the structure.
Inside the courtyard, there is a two-storey range at the north end, which includes a central door with Tudor detailing leading to domestic quarters. Flanking this door are two basket-arched doors. On the first floor, there are two small Gothic windows beneath a piended roof. The flanks of the building have various entrances and windows for the coach, stable, and byre, all similarly arched, with one door having been enlarged. Above, there are lofts featuring square openings with moulded frames, some of which are blocked. Additionally, a circular turret is attached at the northeast angle, possibly serving as a dove-cot.
