Description
Maryhill Public Library, located at 1502-1508 Maryhill Road in Glasgow, was designed by James R Rhind and built between 1903 and 1905. This two-storey building with a basement features a Renaissance-style façade with five bays facing Maryhill Road. The basement is finished in polished ashlar with a rusticated appearance, while the ground floor is banded and has been stone cleaned.
The outer bays are advanced, with the left bay containing the main entrance, which is pilastered and topped with a pediment that features a carved tympanum. The entrance has a round-arched doorway with recessed double-leaf doors and a fanlight above. There is a single architraved corniced window with an oculus above the door. To the extreme right, there are steps leading to a simpler architraved doorway, also with an oculus above it, and a pedimented window on the first floor.
In the central three bays, there are single windows on the ground floor with pilaster architraves, while the first-floor windows are round-arched with pilastered reveals. A heavy band course above the ground floor supports Ionic columns that flank the windows. The first-floor casement windows feature a central dividing astragal and six-pane glazing. The eaves have a frieze inscribed with "Maryhill Public Library," and there is a heavy cornice with a deep plain parapet. The left bay is topped with a segmental pediment that has a sculpture group above it.
