Description
St Aloysius College, located at 45-47 Hill Street in Glasgow, was designed by Archibald Macpherson from Edinburgh, with the main block completed in 1883 and the original single-storey wings enlarged in 1902. The building showcases Italian Renaissance architecture and stands four storeys tall, constructed of polished ashlar with sash and case windows featuring architraves and glazing bars.
The main block has a three-bay façade, highlighted by a wide central bay that includes a recessed portico with a pediment rising to the first floor, supported by Roman Ionic columns in antis. This central area is flanked by windows, while the first floor features four symmetrical two-light windows, with the central pair partially obscured by the pediment. Above, the two-storey upper section has a full-height central recessed bay under a triple arch, with balconies on the second and third floors. The second floor has symmetrically arranged pedimented windows, and the third floor features two-light column mullioned sashes. The building is capped with an eaves cornice.
On the elevation facing Dalhousie Street, there are five bays. The second floor has four pedimented windows, with a smaller central column mullioned two-light pedimented window flanked by these. Smaller windows on the second floor break through the upper string course, surrounding a round-headed pediment window. The roof features two shaped, pedimented stacks. A datestone is marked "1885".
The single-storey wings have a rusticated plinth and feature quasi-Venetian windows, with two windows flanking a segmental-headed window set in a pedimented niche, topped by a balustrade above the cornice. The elevation of the wing facing Dalhousie Street consists of seven bays, with two and three-light columned lintelled windows that have lunettes above the central light of the three-light windows. There is a single western return bay to the lane, which includes a three-light window and a small crescent window above a blocking course.
