Description

Grecian Chambers is a three-storey commercial building located at 336-356 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, designed by Alexander Thomson in 1865. This Graeco-Egyptian structure features a painted ashlar facade and has modern shops on the ground floor. The building is organized into 15 main bays across five sections.

The central entrance to the upper floors on Sauchiehall Street includes a ramped door framed by disc-decorated architraves and consoles, topped with a shallow block pediment that has an anthemion acroterion above the first-floor cill band. The wider outer bays on the first floor feature two-light windows with anta mullions, which are consoled and corniced, while above them are dwarf pilastraded three-light windows. These windows are adorned with block pediments that also have anthemion acroteria and a disc frieze, contributing to the raised parapet.

The central bays contain thirteen ramped, architraved, and corniced windows, each with incised friezes and anthemion acroteria. The second floor is characterized by a squat columned eaves gallery with recessed glazing, and the parapet is interrupted by podia. The continuous eaves frieze and cornice enhance the overall design.

On the elevation facing Scott Street, the first floor features five ramped, console corniced windows, while the second floor has an 11-light dwarf pilastrade with incised necking and wider outer bays.
