Description
James Sellars (Campbell Douglas and Sellars), 1882.
Classical, 2-storey, attic and basement rising to 3 storeys
and attic on Buccleuch Street elevation. Droved ashlar
mansion converted to Sick Children's Hospital, now nursery
school.
SCOTT STREET ELEVATION: 6 bays. Entrance bay breaking forward
with pedimented, architraved doorway, round-headed stair
light with carved frieze/panels above representing charity,
supported by cherubs; above, 3-light stone-mullioned window
and crowning short balustrade with rectangular piers. To
right of entry 8 symmetrical sash windows - 2 to each floor
- with cill bands, pedimented dormers heads. Wallhead stack.
To left of entry: (6 symmetrical sashes, 3 to 1st and 2nd
floor, stone mullioned attic lights; central pedimented; 2
wallhead stacks.
BUCCLEUCH STREET ELEVATION: 3 full bays with 2 narrow side
bays and low bay later addition. 12 symmetrical sash windows
6 to each floor with cill bands; pedimented dormer heads on
main block. 2 bays of single-light sashes with 2-light stone
mullioned attic windows and bay window to ground floor;
lintelled and corniced side entrance. 2nd floor cornice and
dormer breaking wallhead. Piended slate roof. End stack.
INTERIOR AND DECORATION: lower part of windows of each ward
filled with painted glass, centre designs illustrate nursery
tales.
Principal staircase windows stained glass; Christ blessing
the little children by Shrigley and Hunt, Lancaster and
London.
