Description
Garnethill Convent Secondary Roman Catholic School, located at 45 Scott Street in Glasgow, was designed by James Sellars of Campbell Douglas and Sellars in 1882. This classical building features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, rising to three storeys and an attic on the Buccleuch Street elevation. Originally a droved ashlar mansion, it has since been converted into a Sick Children's Hospital and is now a nursery school.
The Scott Street elevation consists of six bays, with the entrance bay protruding forward. It features a pedimented, architraved doorway and a round-headed stair light adorned with a carved frieze and panels above that represent charity, supported by cherubs. Above this, there is a three-light stone-mullioned window and a short balustrade with rectangular piers. To the right of the entrance, there are eight symmetrical sash windows—two on each floor—complete with cill bands and pedimented dormer heads. A wallhead stack is present. To the left of the entrance, there are six symmetrical sash windows, three on the first and second floors, along with stone-mullioned attic lights and a central pediment; two wallhead stacks are also visible.
On the Buccleuch Street elevation, there are three full bays accompanied by two narrow side bays and a low bay that is a later addition. This elevation features twelve symmetrical sash windows, six on each floor, with cill bands and pedimented dormer heads on the main block. There are also two bays of single-light sashes, two-light stone-mullioned attic windows, and a bay window on the ground floor. The side entrance is lintelled and corniced, and the second-floor cornice and dormer break the wallhead. The roof is piended slate with an end stack.
Inside, the lower parts of the windows in each ward are filled with painted glass, with central designs illustrating nursery tales. The principal staircase windows feature stained glass depicting Christ blessing the little children, created by Shrigley and Hunt from Lancaster and London.
