Description
The building comprises a school building, constructed in several phases, with a main block designed by James Thomson of Baird and Thomson in 1878, a north-east block by W F McGibbon in 1886, and later additions in 1898 (the lower linking block).
The main block is two storeys with a three-storey central tower bay, arranged over eleven unequal bays in a 1-4-1-4-1 configuration, exhibiting symmetry with prominent advanced pavilion bays. It is built in polished ashlar, featuring casement windows with horizontal glazing bars. A projecting central portico has coupled square Doric pillars framing a keyblocked arched entrance, topped with an independent mutule cornice and a parapet with an inset central decoration. The ground floor has a cill band and lugged architraved windows; tripartite windows are at the ends, while the central bays have single lights. The first floor windows are single-light in the central bays and tripartite with anta mullions in the outer bays; moulded cills and plain aprons are present, with consoles centred above. A bracketed cornice runs along the centre and ends. A single-stage bell tower features coupled pilasters framing a console keyblocked arched bellcote, a bracketed cornice, and a pierced die parapet with obelisk finials. Piended roofs cover the pavilion sections, with corniced end stacks and skylights in the central bays. The western elevation, facing Garnethill Street, has five unequal bays arranged 2-1-2, with a pilastered, arched entrance in the fourth bay from the north. The window arrangement mirrors that of the main elevation, with a tripartite window in the central bay.
A squared and coped droved ashlar boundary wall, topped with corniced or ball finials and cast-iron balusters, runs along the street. A two-storey janitor's house is attached to the eastern return and features two-light windows with anta mullions, two on the ground floor flanking a plain window, and one central first-floor window set on the cill band.
The north-east block (1886) is two storeys with an attic and basement, arranged over six bays by three. It is built in polished ashlar, with bays divided by bold pier buttresses surmounted by scrolls and linked to a blind parapet at the first floor. A continuous moulded cill band is present on the ground floor, above which is a cornice. The first floor features a continuous moulded cill band, a plain entablature eaves cornice, and a shallow die parapet. It has sash and case windows, with two-light basement windows featuring lugged architraves and anta mullions. A pedimented tripartite entrance is located at No. 43 Garnethill Street, and lugged architraves frame the ground and first floor windows. Single-light windows are found in the 1st and 5th bays from the east on both upper floors, and a pedimented, pilastered tripartite attic window sits in the first bay from the north on Garnethill Street, alongside skylights. Corniced end stacks are present. Coped boundary wall with ball finials and cast-iron balustrade runs along Garnethill Street.
