Description

The Hall and Janitor's House at Ruchill Parish Church, located at 17 Shakespeare Street in Glasgow, was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1899. This building comprises halls and a janitor's house arranged around a courtyard to the south of the church. It features an asymmetrical two-storey elevation facing the street, with a tall single-storey hall at the rear, constructed from grey and snecked ashlar.

The west elevation includes a wide south bay with ground and first floor windows set in a recessed panel beneath a shallow arch supported by impost blocks. Above this, there is a gablet with a symbolic niche. The windows have segmental heads and are linked in an Art Nouveau design. The central doorpiece has wide curved margins and a lintel supported on plain brackets, with a shallow segmental window above it. To the north, there is a four-light window featuring a shallow swan-neck detail, and two first floor windows with projecting curved cills. A curved stair bay at the north end has three tall narrow lipped windows, and the slate roofs are hidden behind a parapet.

The courtyard elevation is buttressed and features an asymmetrical east domestic range, which is two storeys high and includes a stair turret.

Inside, the ground floor has a full-height hall with a wide, heavy, bolted collar and tie beam roof that includes curved bracing. The east end is canted and features an Art Nouveau curved-headed, multi-paned window. The walls are two-thirds panelled with a deep cornice. There is a hall extension to the south that has tall folding doors with similar detailing. All doors throughout the building include typical Mackintosh detailed glazed panels. A curved stair with a stylised cut-out detail is present in the landing balustrade. On the first floor, the Quiet Room and Upper Hall are divided by tall doors with an ogee design, both featuring boarded two-thirds panelling. The Upper Hall is illuminated from above by a rafter roof.
