Description

This late 19th century tenement building, located at 257, 259, and 261 Glasgow, is a four-storey structure featuring 16 bays and distinctive dormered bows in the mansard attic. It is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with a pitted base course. A cornice separates the ground and first floors, while a simple eaves cornice finishes the top.

The building has full-height bows in the first, sixth, ninth, and sixteenth bays on the left side, each with five-light windows on every floor, separated by cornices. The windows on the first and second floors are adorned with consoled cornices. There are steps leading to doorways in the second, fifth, seventh, tenth, and thirteenth bays from the left, which are flanked by decorative cast-iron railings and ashlar dies. The doorways feature two-leaf panelled doors, all with plate glass fanlights, except for No. 253. The fenestration is regular throughout the building. The bowed bays culminate in bowed dormers that have clay finials and shallow conical roofs, with a bipartite box dormer above each pair of single windowed bays.

The left return of the building has a blank elevation and currently faces a neighbouring gap site from 1991. To the right, it is adjoined by a three-storey and basement tenement. The building features sash and case windows for the single windows, with nine-paned upper sashes. The bowed bays have fixed and possibly casement glazing, with coloured glass in the upper panes. There are stacks located at the end and dividing walls, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring overhanging eaves on the dormers.
