Description
Kirklee Bridge, built between 1899 and 1900 by engineers Forman and McColl, is a tall masonry three-arch bridge located on Kirklee Road over the River Kelvin. It features a central depressed arch flanked by subsidiary round-headed arches that span the Kelvin Walkway.
The bridge is constructed from polished red sandstone, with rock-faced soffits and abutments. Pairs of granite Ionic columns support a polished pink granite parapet on either side of the main arch. The arches are adorned with roll-moulding above the voussoirs, while the subsidiary arches have cartouche keystones. The spandrels of the main arch display the City of Glasgow arms in bas-relief.
The bridge includes a die and baluster parapet with cast-iron lamp brackets positioned over the arches. There is a solid granite parapet over the abutments, which features terminal drum piers that support large cast-iron lamp brackets. The parapet also splays to the north.
