Description
Belmont Bridge, built around 1870, is a single span depressed arch bridge that rises high over the River Kelvin. The bridge features stugged ashlar and polished ashlar voussoirs, with bull-faced lower work on the approach walls, abutments, and retaining walls. It has tall piers that are chamfered at the angles, adorned with quatrefoil medallions at the spandrel level. The arch ring is channelled, and the soffits are made of bull-faced ashlar. A corbell-table supports a traceried parapet, which includes terminal and central die piers, the latter having a cornice that appears to be checked back on the inside face. The approach walls have a coped ashlar parapet. An original subsidiary span to the north over Gariochmill Road has been replaced with a plain flat concrete structure and a modern parapet, although the springers of the original arched structure remain.
