Eldon Street Bridge, Eldon Street, Glasgow

Eldon Street Bridge, located on Eldon Street in Glasgow, was designed by engineers Forman and McCall and opened in June 1895. This cast-iron road bridge spans the River Kelvin and features a single segmental arch. To the east, there is a lintelled underpass that was originally intended for railway use but now serves as a footpath.

The bridge is supported by polished red ashlar piers and abutments. It has six cast-iron ribs forming the arch, with the outermost ribs featuring traceried spandrels and the City of Glasgow arms. The parapet consists of cast-iron tracery that rests on cast-iron brackets connecting the terminal polished ashlar piers. To the east, a polished red ashlar approach and boundary wall, complete with intermediate coped piers, borders Kelvingrove Park. The underpass has bull-faced ashlar walls that support shallow brick tunnel vaults between concrete girders. The section to the south is constructed differently, using cast-iron girders, but maintains a continuous parapet wall masonry without any breaks.
