Description

Forman and McCall, engineers; opened June 1895. Cast-iron road bridge spanning River Kelvin with a single segmental arch. Adjoining E. abutment, a lintelled underpass formerly to serve railway, now footpath.

Bridge with polished red ashlar piers and abutments. 6 cast-iron ribs to arch; outermost with traceried spandrels and City of Glasgow arms. Parapet of cast-iron tracery rest on cast-iron brackets linking terminal polished ashlar piers. To E. a polished red ashlar approach/boundary wall with intermediate coped piers borders Kelvingrove Park. Underpass with bull-faced ashlar walls supporting shallow brick tunnel vaults between concrete girders. Section to S. of different construction with cast-iron girders; there is no break in parapet wall masonry.
