Description
The aqueduct, built in 1879, is a large single-span masonry structure that carries the Forth and Clyde Canal (Glasgow Branch) over Bilsland Drive (B808). It is constructed from bull-faced coursed sandstone rubble, featuring spandrels and wing walls, an ashlar string course, a parapet with a coping, and rusticated ashlar voussoirs. The canal is supported by a flat segmental arch, while the towpath on the west side is set on a semicircular arch. The wing walls are slightly battered, with the eastern side parallel to the canal and the western side having a straight northern wing wall that runs parallel to the road, while the southern wing wall curves to follow the wall. Pilasters are positioned at the ends of the span on the eastern side, and on the western side, the pilasters are set in a re-entrant angle. The masonry of the pilasters is dressed at the corners.
