Description

Stow College, located at 75 Hotspur Street in Glasgow, is an impressive three-storey board school designed by Robert A Bryden around 1905. It features a cruciform plan and showcases classical and baroque architectural details. The building is constructed from red sandstone with an ashlar rusticated plinth, which is channelled at the ground floor for the central west-facing section. It has sash and case windows and a slate roof.

The main west front has a prominent central bay with a wide pediment. At the ground floor, there is a four-light window, and giant Ionic columns with channelled piers extend through the first and second floors. The name "Garrioch School" is inscribed on a blind balcony or plinth. The first floor features a four-light window, while the second floor has a stylised Venetian window with a giant keystone and a pediment above, complete with a coved tympanum. The two flanking bays are stepped back, and there is a balustraded cill course and cornice for each floor's bipartite windows. Additionally, there are two further similarly detailed bays on each side, which are also stepped back and wider as they extend out. The outer bays each contain an arched door set within a pilastered and balustraded doorpiece, designated for boys and girls.

The north and south elevations each feature a tripartite and tall Diocletian window that lights the stairwell, along with one additional bay and two narrower bays that are stepped back.

The east elevation is gabled and has a regular arrangement of windows, with a tall, square corniced stack attached towards the north.

The college is complemented by gatepiers and railings, which include a variety of near-square-plan gatepiers with either pedimented or arched and domed caps, along with wrought-iron railings and gates.
