Description
40 Clouston Street is an L-plan tenement block built around 1865, featuring Thomsonesque architectural details. The building stands four storeys high with a basement, displaying seven bays on Clouston Street and ten bays on Sanda Street. The basement is constructed of rockfaced sandstone, while the upper levels are finished in ashlar with a banded design at the ground floor. The roof is modern tile.
On Clouston Street, the façade features alternating canted and single windows on each storey, with an additional door inserted at ground level. The entrances are approached by steps and are adorned with attractive Thomsonesque V cast-iron railings. A cornice runs above the ground storey, with a honeysuckle frieze above the first storey and a Greek key frieze above the second. The third storey windows are supported by three-quarter submerged pilasters that hold up the frieze and anthemions, topped by a main cornice. The windows are sash and case with plate glass glazing, although some have modern glazing.
On Sanda Street, the building has similar architectural details but features a different window arrangement, consisting of four flat windows and four canted windows, with each pair of canted windows flanking a flat window. The basement areas are also protected by Thomsonesque cast-iron railings.
