Description

Maryhill Community Centre, located at 1513 Maryhill Road in Glasgow, was designed by Duncan McNaughtan around 1878 and showcases Dutch Renaissance architectural style. The building is two stories tall with a five-bay entrance front, featuring a canted angle bay on the left and two return bays on the right. At the rear, there is a tall seven-bay hall constructed of ashlar stone.

The entrance is marked by a central projecting porch with a parapet, which is supported by paired Corinthian columns and pilasters, leading up to eight steps. Above the porch is a casement window set in a shallow projection and flanked by paired pilasters. The remaining windows are adorned with moulded architraves and bracketed cills, featuring flat scrolled pedimented heads on the ground floor, with a cill course and entablatures on the first floor. At the top of the building is a central pilastered segmental shell with a pedimented gable above the main cornice, which encloses a clock. The outer finials and a small pedimented finial cap add to the decorative elements. A slender octagonal timber ventilator with an ogee roof and finial completes the design. The roof is piended with slate and has a red tile ridge.

Inside, the seven-bay hall is supported by giant Corinthian pilasters that hold up the main entablature. It features five round-arched windows with moulded spandrels and entablatures, while the outer bays have blind niches at ground level and raised panels above. A central decorative panel with a segmental pedimented head is positioned above the cornice. The hall also has a piended slate roof with a red tile ridge and three squat finialled ventilators.
