Description

The former Maryhill Primary School, designed by T L Watson around 1881-1884, is an impressive two-storey, 16-bay symmetrical Greek Revival building that served as a Board School. It features a prominent three-storey, four-bay central pedimented section on both the west and east elevations, constructed from pale red sandstone ashlar. The design includes a deep base course, a continuous cill course at the ground floor, a projecting band course, and cills for the first-floor windows, along with an eaves cornice and a blocking course that steps up at the corners. The central pedimented section has bays above the ground floor divided by giant pilasters, with angle pilasters and pilasters framing the first-floor windows. There have been later alterations, including a large addition made after World War II on the right side of the building.

The windows are plate glass timber sash and case types with horns in the pedimented section, featuring a timber T-plan glazing pattern with top and bottom hoppers on the first floor. The ground floor windows are boarded up, and the building has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior, which was partly seen in 2007, is in poor condition and includes some dado height timber boarding and tiling. There are iron railings and a timber handrail on the staircases.

The boundary walls and railings consist of a low stepped boundary wall to the east and north, adorned with decorative railings featuring crown finials at the stepping points.
