Description

Willowbank Primary School, built in 1900 by Alexander Petrie, is a three-storey, seven-bay, T-plan, symmetrical classical school building. The front elevations are made of red ashlar sandstone, which is channelled on the first storey, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. It features a bull-faced base course, a string course between the first and second storeys, an eaves course, a projecting cornice, and a blocked parapet. The building has tall rectangular windows.

The principal elevation includes a single-storey entrance porch with a flat roof that is advanced and has a parapet at the centre. The entrance features timber-panelled doors on the sides, flanked by paired windows. Above the entrance is a plain frieze with blind oculi and the inscription "WILLOW BANK PUBLIC SCHOOL." The second and third storeys have regular fenestration, with a blank central bay that has a shield inscribed with "ERECTED IN THE YEAR 1900." Blind oculi are located between the storeys, and the elevation is articulated with giant order pilasters. An attic frieze is inscribed with "SCHOOL BOARD OF GLASGOW."

The rear elevation has not been seen since 2002. The east side elevation has six bays, with a four-bay advanced block to the left. The two bays on the right are similar to the principal elevation and feature stone mullioned bipartite windows on the left. The left return continues with steps leading to a square-headed entrance within an inscribed semicircular arch, above which is a panel inscribed "GIRLS." There is a pilastered window on the second storey, with brackets supporting a semicircular-arched pediment. The advanced bays to the left have irregular fenestration, and there is an engaged stack breaking the eaves on the centre right.

The west side elevation mirrors the east side, except the side door is inscribed "BOYS." The building has 10-pane timber frame sash and case windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior has not been seen since 2001. The boundary wall features low bull-faced courses and ornate cast-iron railings fixed to saddle-back coping. There are blocked square-plan gatepiers with a fluted frieze and pediments that terminate in shallow-domed drum caps, along with two-leaf ornate cast-iron gates.
