Description

18 Willowbank Street in Glasgow is a four-storey and basement terrace of tenements built around 1863-1864, featuring a return elevation to Woodlands Road. The building is constructed from polished ashlar stone, with a channelled finish at the ground level and has been stone cleaned.

The elevation facing Willowbank Street consists of five tenements arranged in five bays. Each tenement, except for No. 2, has a centrally placed pilastered doorway that supports a corniced entablature. The doorways are recessed with pilastered reveals that support a moulded archivolt leading to a round-arched fanlight. The end bays are tripartite, and all upper windows are architraved, with cornices on the first and second floors, the latter featuring bracketed cills. The windows are sash with plate glass or 10-pane glazing, although some modern pivot windows are present at No. 24. A band course runs over the ground level and at the cill strings of the first and third floors, stepping down continuously along the terrace. The building has an eaves band course and a plain main cornice, along with tall wallhead and axial stacks.

No. 2 has undergone alterations on the ground floor, with windows and doors blocked up. The centre bay features a tripartite window on the upper floors.

The rear elevation is made of coursed ashlar walling with polished margins, and includes a canted stone stair with a solid newel and parapet.

The elevation facing Woodlands Road is seven bays wide and includes shops at the ground level. It is detailed similarly to the Willowbank Street elevation, except that the close doorway is plain.
