Description
The Glasgow College of Building, located at 85 Adelphi Street in Glasgow, is a three-storey, eight-bay school building designed in the Renaissance style by T L Watson in 1894. The exterior features pink ashlar stone on the east, west, and north sides, with part of the east elevation constructed from rubble at the southern end. The south elevation is made of squared snecked rubble. The building has a slate roof and ashlar stacks, with the upper part of the southern stack rebuilt using blue engineering brick. The barrel roofs of the stair towers are covered in lead.
The north front facing the Clyde has two wide tripartite windows on the ground and first floors, flanked by sculptured tympana that accentuate six inner pedimented bays on the first floor. There are four smaller windows on the second floor and a dentil eaves cornice. The west elevation, which faces Florence Street, also has eight bays, featuring tripartite windows on the ground and first floors to the left. An arched doorway, adorned with paired Ionic pilasters and inscribed with 'Boys Door' above, is located within an off-centre advanced stair tower. All windows on the east, west, and north elevations have architraves, with aprons at the first floor level.
The east elevation mirrors the west, with an arched doorway featuring paired Ionic pilasters and the inscription 'Girls Door' in the entablature. The south elevation at the rear includes a central bowed bay that rises through all three storeys. The building has timber-framed sash and case windows, most of which retain the original pattern of 12 lying panes.
Inside, there is a central glazed atrium with an arched braced roof and a modern glazed lift shaft. The stone stairs feature iron balustrades and a timber rail. Some rooms maintain original timber tongue and groove half-height panelling. The doors are timber and glazed timber, though not original. The upper floors are timber, while the ground floor has a non-original screed. Original partitions on the topmost floor to the east have been removed to create a large studio space.
The property is also complemented by gate piers and iron railings along Florence Street.
