Description

The Tidal Weir at Glasgow Green in Glasgow is a structure designed to control the water level upstream. The original weir was built in 1852, and the current structure consists of moving sluice gates and bridges that carry pipes, developed over two main building periods.

The first phase involved the construction of impressive classical red ashlar piers and abutments between 1896 and 1901, designed by A B MacDonald, the city engineer. This design was part of an arrangement that closely resembles the existing structure, with consultation from Sir Benjamin Baker.

The second phase features two parallel and identical bridges, each carrying a services pipe. These bridges are linked at the top and have decking. The steelwork for these bridges was supplied by Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd., of Ipswich, as noted on an inscribed plate dated 1945, and the bridges were completed in 1949.
