Description
The Kelvin Aqueduct, built between 1787 and 1790 by engineer Robert Whitworth, is a significant structure that spans 400 feet, carrying the Forth and Clyde Canal over the River Kelvin in Maryhill, Glasgow. It features four heavy segmental arches supported by v-cutwater buttress-piers, with only one pier located in the river. The lower sections of the aqueduct are constructed with heavily channelled rustic masonry and bold voussoirs, while the upper sections are made of polished ashlar, including the ashlar soffits. The aqueduct is topped with a polished ashlar coped parapet that has die piers positioned over the buttresses.
