Description

Kelvinside House, located at 2 Beaconsfield Road in Kelvinside, Glasgow, is an asymmetrical villa built around 1874, with additions made to the west and north in 1894 by architect James Thomson. The original villa features stugged ashlar stone with polished margins and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, highlighted by a three-storey Italianate tower above the porch.

The south elevation has three bays, with full-height canted windows on either side of single light architraved windows, which are corniced at the ground level. There is a stepped back porch bay on the east flank, leading to a Roman Doric pilastered doorway topped with a mutule cornice and a tall double-leaf panelled outer door. The vestibule door includes a fanlight. Above the porch, the tower features three-light windows on the second floor, accompanied by a low balustraded balcony. The villa has sash windows with plate glass glazing on both elevations, deeply overhanging bracketed eaves, slate roofs, and semi-conical roofs over the projecting bays. It also has corniced axial stacks and round-headed dormers.

The baronial additions to the west include a three-storey tower made of stugged ashlar with polished margins and quoins. All windows in this section are mullioned and transomed. A large corbelled canted oriel is located at the southwest angle on the first floor, featuring a strapwork parapet. The eaves have a corbel course, and the tower is topped with an embattled parapet and tall angled diamond stacks.

Additionally, there is a single-storey addition from the 1930s to the west, constructed of rendered brick. The property includes balustraded terraces with steps leading to the front garden. The boundary with Beaconsfield Road is supported by stugged ashlar retaining walls that hold up ashlar balustrading. There are also a pair of tall square painted ashlar gatepiers.
