Description
49-53 Virginia Street in Glasgow is a symmetrical, five-bay tenement building that likely dates from the late 18th century and was reconfigured around 1800. It stands four storeys tall and features classical detailing. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a painted tripartite Ionic pilastered doorcase at the centre.
Notable architectural elements include a base course, a first-floor cill course, and a main cornice. Each floor has tripartite windows in the centre bay, with the first-floor window set in a recessed segmental panel. The architraves of the first-floor windows have incised ornamentation, and the windows flanking the centre feature a cornice. The ashlar parapet has a half-balustrade relief, which was damaged in the centre in 1988. The sash and case windows have a small-pane glazing pattern, and there are gable end stacks.
