Description

Gartnavel Royal Hospital, designed by architect Charles Wilson between 1841 and 1843, is a large hospital built in the Tudor style. It consists of two detached E-plan ranges set at right angles, with two or three storeys, attics, and basements. The western range is more elaborate, intended for wealthy patients, while the eastern range is plainer, catering to less fortunate individuals. Both ranges are constructed of stugged ashlar with polished margins and dressings, and the stone has been cleaned.

The western range features a symmetrical northern facade with 35 bays, arranged in 11-bay two-storey blocks and three-bay three-storey end pavilions. A seven-bay three-storey central pavilion, which contains the Superintendent's flat, rises to a four-storey tower above the entrance. The pavilions have four-centred arched portals with square-headed hoodmoulds and mask label-stops, depicting portrait heads of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the centre. The central pavilion has a recessed architraved tripartite doorpiece with glazed lights. All windows are set in roll-moulded reveals and hood moulds, with single or bipartite designs featuring transoms and mullions, and tripartite windows at the pavilions flanked by buttresses that rise to tall octagonal pinnacles. The facade is further enhanced by continuous roll-moulding at the cills, a deep plain parapet at the eaves, and tall linked axial Tudor stacks. The flanks are detailed similarly.

The rear elevation is made of coursed stugged ashlar and features single light windows, along with some full-height canted oriels. The linking flanks have tall coursed rubble walls leading to the gardens.

Inside, the central pavilion includes the superintendent's private apartments and a private garden at the rear. The wings, which provide separate male and female accommodation, contain small private chambers that open off wide galleries, some of which feature original three-arch timber screens.

The eastern range has 21 bays arranged with three-bay three-storey end pavilions and five-bay three-storey central pavilions. The details are similar to those of the western range, except that hood-moulds are only present on the ground floor, and the label stops of the doorpiece are simple blocks. The southern flank includes two small ogee-domed pavilions that link to a tall coursed rubble garden wall to the south, which serves as an airing ground. The interior features large dormitories with a few smaller rooms off, and a large dining hall that has been modernised.
