Description
The north range of steading at Athelstaneford Mains dates to 1860, as indicated by a plaque above the depressed-arched entrance pend. The building is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, with dressings and chamfered reveals to the main openings. A stone bull's head is set in a plaque above the pend, and the entrance is surmounted by a date plaque and a clock decorated with fruit. The roof is flat.
To the right of the pend are a cartshed and a granary. Three arches remain at ground level, with four windows in the loft above. A doorway is positioned to the right, flanked by windows, with a further door providing access to the loft above. A gabled bay extends to the outer right, featuring a single window on the first floor. A single-storey range runs to the left of the pend.
The building features straight skews and finials to the gables, and is roofed with red pantiles.
J Douglas of Athelstaneford Mains was a well-known breeder of shorthorn cattle in the mid-19th century.
